Today the need of the day is an awareness of accreditation/certification and familiarity with a variety of relevant laws that are in force and this takes on more urgency in healthcare, food industries and testing laboratories. Dr. A.S. Kanagasabapathy

Dr. A.S. Kanagasabapathy began his career in the year 1966 from CMC Hospital, Vellore, as Professor and Head of Clinical Biochemistry and remained there until retirement in 2000. For over three decades he has been deeply involved in promoting the quality of laboratory services and also in teaching and research. He has served as a guide for 9 research scholars and published over 100 papers in national and international journals. As the convenor of the QC committee of the Association of Clinical Biochemists of India, he started a national level external quality assurance programme 30 years ago with 50 laboratories, which has over 2000 participants today.

Dr. A.S.K. was President of ACBI for the year 2000 -2001 and has conducted over 100 quality control workshops in several regions for the benefit of clinical pathologists and medical laboratory personnel. The participants included were from large teaching and non-teaching hospitals as well as corporate / private laboratories in urban areas and small laboratories in rural areas. As part of his “out-reach program”, he extended his services to hundreds of laboratories in the country. His efforts have resulted in creating a significant awareness among lab personnel on QA & QC.

He is also associated with the WHO in various laboratory QC activities, has been the author/coauthor of 3 WHO documents. He is a Fellow of the Association of Clinical Biochemists of India as well as the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry of the US. In 1977 ACBI honoured him with the A. J. Thakur Award for Distinguished Services in Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine. Dr.Kanagasabapathy was the Chairman of Technical Committee constituted by the NABL in 1997. He has contributed significantly towards the preparation of NABL document No.112 of 2005. He is a member of Advisory Committee and Drafting Committee for the preparation of ICMR’s “Guidelines for Good Clinical Laboratory Practice” as well as ICMR Task Force for establishing Indian normatives for clinical laboratory parameters. He is a regular speaker on lab related topics nationwide. Dr. Kanagasabapathy is a member ofClinical Chemistry Trainee Council Advisory Board of “Clinical Chemistry”, the official journal of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry.

Mr. Basudev Bhattacharya

Mr. Basudev Bhattacharya is a Graduate in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay and holds a Diploma in Materials Management from Punjabi University andis a known figure in the field of calibration and measurement uncertainty. He has been a quality practitioner and measurement management system initiator for the last four decades. He is also a Certified Lead Auditor for ISO 9001 QMS and a Lead Assessor for the National Accreditation Board for Test and Calibration Laboratories (NABL).
Mr. Bhattacharyawas an external examiner for M.Tech in Reliability Engineering at IIT-Bombay and an External Faculty of BITS-Pilani for MS in Quality Management Programme. He has represented India in the International Illumination Commission (CIE), and was the Team Leader of the Western Region Assessment Panel for Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award.

He is also an International Consultant of the Geneva based United Nation Organization, International Trade Centre (ITC) of UNCTAD/WTO and the BSI Group of UK on quality management and laboratory accreditation. He has been in the training industry & service personnel in the country and abroad (viz. Mauritius, Bangladesh, Dubai, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi & Rwanda) on measurement and quality related topics like, “Laboratory Accreditation as per ISO/IEC 17025 & ISO 15189”, “Internal quality auditing”, “Estimation of Measurement Uncertainty in Test & Calibration”, “Assuring quality of test results and examination procedures”.

Over the years Mr. Bhattacharyahas conducted more than 200 training programmes and has trained more than 2500 individuals. He has also provided support for implementation of laboratory management system to a number of laboratories in different areas including clinical, chemical and engineering disciplines leading to the NABL accreditation.

Dr. T. A Varkey

Dr. T. A Varkey is the Managing Director of Medilab Specialty Laboratories, a Kochi based NABL accredited medical diagnostics laboratory chain. He started his professional studies at CMC Hospital, Vellore; later in 1975 he successfully completed B. Sc (Hons) MLT from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, further to which he acquired a Ph.D in Quality Management in Health Care from the Open International University. He has also undergone NABH Assessors Training for Essential Standards for Medical Laboratories from the Quality Council of India in 2010.

His varied career includes a stint as a laboratory technician at CMC Hospital, Vellore and then as a technical assistant at the University College of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. Later on he held the office of Senior Medical Technologist at ARAMCO Hospital, Saudi Arabia from 1978- ’90. In 1992 he established Medilab at Kochi, which further grew into the Medilab Specialty Laboratories India Pvt. Ltd, having NABL Accreditation since 2006.

He has been associated with Kerala Private Medical Laboratories Association activities for long; Ernakulam District President during ’94- ’98, State President during ’98- ’02 and Secretary and Executive member since 2002. He was the Regional Coordinator of the Quality Council of India, honorary from 2008. Dr. Varkey is the Founder and President of the Laboratory Owners Association since 2010 onwards and served as the QCI Laboratory Representative to the Kerala Paramedical Bill Council in 2008. He has also been an Assessor from 2010 onwards at QCI Essential Standards for Medical Laboratories and has assessed 30 Kerala Government Hospital Laboratories for QCI Essential Standards.

He has strived to contribute his share of knowledge and experience to the betterment of the society as well as the state of affairs in the improvement and maintenance of medical diagnostics, updating laboratories in India and providing quality diagnostic services to the common public. He has also conducted many awareness programs on quality assurance from 1994 onwards, jointly with the QCI, NABL and NABH.

An active philanthropist and humanist, Dr. Varkey has been a member of the Lions Club International since 1992 and has served as the Club President, Zone Chairperson, Region Chairperson apart from serving as the Vice Governor and District Governor of the Lions District International during 2009- 2012. As the Public Relations Officer and District Project Coordinator of the ‘Sight For Kids’ program he was involved in conducting an eye screening project in 2005; over 55 lakh students have been screened so far. He has visualized and implemented the planting of more than 3 lakh trees in the revenue districts of Ernakulam, Idukki and Alleppey, providing 70 UV water filters to schools and public institutions and has also strived to create an awareness of energy conservation, organic farming, and water conservation and so on in school children.

Mrs. Sarada Varkey

Mrs. Sarada Varkey is a B.Sc Chemistry graduate from Kerala University and a B.Sc (Hons) from All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi. She started her professional career with the Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi and later served at the Aramco Hospital, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Along with her husband Dr. T.A. Varkey, she foundedMedilab Speciality Laboratories and serving as its Director since inception.

Mrs. Sarada has been played a key role in achieving NABL accreditation for Medilab in 2006, she supervises quality control and management practices within the organization apart from providing consulting support to organizations in similar domains. At Q-India, she conceptualizes and coordinates implementation of training programmes and workshops, also addressing sessions on topics related to quality control at medical laboratories.
